Functional Skills 

Functional Skills qualifications are intended to support you to improve your numeracy and literacy skills.  Functional Skills qualifications help you to develop and demonstrate you can apply these vital skills to a range of situations.


We will support you in achieving these qualifications, which will increase your confidence and motivation.  The skills you gain will be valuable in further learning, work and life in general.

These qualifications are intended for learners wishing to develop their English and maths skills, as well as being used to support progress towards GCSE.

Functional Skills qualifications are available across five levels (Entry 1 to Level 2), and are completed in a wide range of college, community and work-based settings.

Functional Skills  - Maths
Available at five levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2). Includes:

  • representing
  • analysing
  • interpreting

Functional Skills – English
Available at five levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2). Includes:

  • speaking and listening
  • reading
  • writing

The Entry-Level qualifications are internally assessed and quality assured. This is also the case for Level 1 and 2 FS English Speaking, Listening and Communication.

Functional Skills assessments at levels 1 and 2 are externally marked and are available to take on any day at any time.
