Duncan R. Barber FRAeS – Patron
Duncan began his professional career as a refrigeration engineer starting his own company after leaving school. He successfully won business to work in support of British Airways (BA) Engineering Line Maintenance in Cardiff in 1973 and following this success, founded AMSS in 1978. Gradual expansion of the business continued, as he worked at various airports around the UK, supporting a number of airlines before designing and developing his first product, the Apollo aircraft heating trolley. This was subsequently purchased in 1982 by the Royal Air Force to support the Falklands conflict. Duncan was set the challenge of delivering 10 units in 7 days under an urgent operational requirement. He repaid the faith shown in his fledgling company by meeting the required timescales and during the campaign the equipment was subsequently described by RAF Stanley as a “Magic bit of kit”. It was from these small beginnings that Duncan’s long relationship with the Royal Air Force grew to being one of their largest suppliers of equipment to date.
To satisfy the Civilian Airline Market the company’s product range of Stairs, Conveyors, Fuel Tank Repair Rigs, Cargo Trucks, Aircraft Docking Systems are delivered globally to customers such as Airbus, Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand, Korean Air, Qantas. AMSS also supplies these products to Ground Handling Company’s such as Menzies, Swissport, DNATA, Abu Dhabi Airport Equipment etc. For the home market AMSS have long standing relationships with British Airways and also BAE Systems supporting Hawk, Tornado and Typhoon with various ground support equipment packages.
All told AMSS supplies Air Forces and Military Agencies in over 20 different countries plus the United Nations and NATO. For the Civilian Market over 200 customers spanning over 40 Countries World-wide.
Duncan’s engineering philosophy is to provide user friendly, easily operated and maintained, rugged, reliable equipment, but most importantly, to then support this as the OEM through and beyond its design life. It is this that he has instilled as the core ethos of AMSS. In these troublesome times when RAF resources are being stretched to their maximum AMSS regularly and proudly deploy staff to support operations in Afghanistan and throughout the Middle East in order to provide the highest standard of customer support to the Royal Air Force, wherever the Mission takes them. To ensure his products satisfy these hostile environments, he himself last year visited both Camp Bastion and Kandahar, to witness, at first hand, the operational envelope in which his equipment performs.
Duncan’s vision for the future is to maintain his company’s ’front line first’ focus in support of Her Majesties armed forces, the Royal Air Force in particular, being at the top of AMSS agenda. He is also very strongly committed to supporting UK Manufacturing and to hand on his expertise in engineering, people skills to the youth of today, so they can become this countries tradesman of the future and explore all opportunities that are offered.
