Starting somewhere new can be a bit intimidating.
New people. New instructors. New routines.
If you’re joining MPCT because you’re thinking about a future in the Armed Forces, you might have a whole list of questions running through your head.
So, what would previous learners tell you if they could go back to their first day?
- You don’t have to be super fit on day one
This is probably one of the biggest worries for new learners.
“What if everyone else is fitter than me?”
Don’t worry, you’re there to develop. Physical training is a big part of MPCT, but you’re not expected to walk through the door as an elite athlete. Your fitness can improve with consistency, effort and the right support.
- It’s different from school
That doesn’t mean there isn’t learning, there absolutely is. MPCT combines vocational learning with physical training, military preparation, teamwork and practical activities.
For people who don’t enjoy sitting behind a desk all day, that can make a huge difference.
- You’ll probably surprise yourself
You might arrive thinking:
“I can’t do that.”
A few months later, you might be doing exactly that. Whether it’s running further, speaking in front of a group, leading a task or simply having the confidence to try something new, progress isn’t always obvious until you look back.
- The people you meet matter
One of the best parts of starting somewhere new can be the people around you. You’ll work with other people who are also figuring out what they want to do next. You’ll learn to communicate, cooperate and deal with different personalities and you might make some friends along the way.
- You don’t have to know exactly what you want to do
You might join because you want to be a soldier.
You might be interested in the Royal Navy or RAF.
You might be considering the police, fire service or another uniformed career.
Or you might simply know that you want something different from traditional education.
MPCT isn’t designed to lock you into one career path. Learners can progress into the Armed Forces, apprenticeships, further education or employment.
The biggest thing to know? You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start, you just need to be ready to give something new a go.
