Find Your Force: Army, Royal Navy, RAF or Royal Marines?

If you’re thinking about a career in the Armed Forces, you might already have one of them in mind, or you might have absolutely no idea and that’s completely normal. Each service offers different careers, environments and experiences. So which one could be right for you?

Army

If you like being active, working outdoors and being part of a team, the Army could be worth exploring. There are hundreds of different Army careers, covering areas including combat, engineering, healthcare, communications, logistics, intelligence, HR and finance.

Joining the Army doesn’t automatically mean becoming an infantry soldier. You might enjoy the Army if you:

  • Like physical challenges
  • Enjoy working in teams
  • Want lots of variety
  • Like being outdoors
  • Enjoy practical tasks
  • Want to push yourself

Royal Navy

The Royal Navy offers careers on land, at sea and in specialist environments. You could find yourself working with advanced technology, engineering, logistics, communications, aviation, healthcare or maritime operations.

You might enjoy the Royal Navy if you:

  • Like technology
  • Enjoy problem-solving
  • Want to work at sea
  • Like learning specialist skills
  • Want a career with plenty of variety

Royal Air Force

The Royal Air Force isn’t just about flying aircraft. There are roles across engineering, cyber, communications, intelligence, logistics, healthcare, security and many other areas. And of course, there are opportunities to work around some seriously impressive aircraft too.

You might enjoy the RAF if you:

  • Love technology
  • Enjoy problem-solving
  • Are interested in aviation
  • Like working with specialist equipment
  • Want a technical career

Royal Marines

If the idea of pushing yourself physically, working as part of a close-knit team and operating in challenging environments appeals to you, the Royal Marines could be worth a look. Royal Marines are trained to operate in some of the world’s most demanding environments and are known for their high levels of fitness, resilience and teamwork. The training is tough, but that’s part of the challenge.

You might enjoy the Royal Marines if you:

  • Love a physical challenge
  • Want to test your limits
  • Work well under pressure
  • Enjoy being outdoors
  • Thrive as part of a team
  • Want a career that’s anything but ordinary

So… which one is best? Well the honest answer is, there isn’t one. The better question is, which one sounds most like you?

If you’re still not sure, that’s fine too. One of the biggest mistakes young people make is thinking they need to have their entire career mapped out before they leave school. Exploring your options is part of figuring out what suits you. MPCT helps young people explore careers in the Armed Forces while developing fitness, qualifications, confidence, teamwork and employability skills.

Our biggest piece of advice is to work out what career would actually make you want to get out of bed in the morning and then work backwards from there. Your future doesn’t have to be decided in one day.
