Thinking about joining the Armed Forces can feel like a massive decision.
If you’ve never spoken to anyone who’s been through the process, you might have no idea what actually happens after you decide to apply.
Here’s a simple breakdown.
Step 1: You decide to apply
It sounds obvious, but this is where everything starts. Before applying, spend some time researching the different careers available. Don’t just choose a role because it sounds cool, think about the skills you’ll use, the qualifications you’ll need and what your day-to-day work could look like.
Step 2: Your application
You’ll complete the relevant application process and provide information about yourself. This is your opportunity to start the journey towards the role you’ve chosen.
Step 3: Assessments
You’ll go through different stages of assessment. These can include fitness, medical and other selection activities depending on the role you’re applying for. This is why preparation matters.
Step 4: Get your fitness up
Don’t wait until the last minute to start training, building fitness takes time. A consistent programme of running, strength work and general conditioning can help you prepare.
Step 5: Prepare for interviews and assessments
Fitness isn’t everything, you’ll also need to demonstrate things such as motivation, teamwork, communication and your understanding of the career you’re applying for.
Step 6: Basic training
If you’re successful, you’ll move on to your initial military training. This is where you’ll start developing the skills and discipline needed for military life. Expect physical training, teamwork, learning new skills and plenty of challenges.
And what if you’re not ready yet?
This is where preparation programmes such as MPCT can help. MPCT combines physical training, military preparation, qualifications and employability development, with support around areas such as fitness, interviews and selection assessments.
The important thing to remember is that you don’t need to know everything before you start, that’s what training is for, your journey doesn’t have to happen overnight.
If you’re 16 or 17 and thinking about joining the Armed Forces, your next step doesn’t necessarily have to be ‘join immediately’. You can take time to improve your fitness, gain qualifications, build confidence and understand the different careers available. The best preparation is knowing what you’re working towards.
